The Reds are ready to reinforce the squad for next season as they will be in the Champions League with the possibility of winning the Premier League to qualify for the competition.
They have sited the left-back position as a bit of a problem area with Jon Flanagan currently holding down that role but he is more at home on the other flank. Loanee Aly Cissokho has been sitting on the bench and Spaniard Jose Enrique has been injured.
They are very unlikely to make the Cissokho deal a permanent one with the French international heading back to Valencia.
So now Brendan Rodgers will look towards signing 26 year-old Schmelzer instead and he will be a top target as they head into the transfer window.
The Borussia Dortmund defender could leave for a price of around 10 million pounds.
